چکیده

Nonlinear relaxation phenomena in three different systems of condensed matter are investigated. (i) First, the phase dynamics in Josephson junctions is analyzed. Specifically, a superconductor-graphene-superconductor (SGS) system exhibits quantum metastable states, and the average escape time from these metastable states in the presence of Gaussian and correlated fluctuations is calculated, accounting for variations in the the noise source intensity and the bias frequency. Moreover, the transient dynamics of a long-overlap Josephson junction (JJ) subject to thermal fluctuations and non-Gaussian noise sources is investigated. Noise induced phenomena are observed, such as the noise enhanced stability and the stochastic resonant activation. (ii) Second, the electron spin relaxation process in a n-type GaAs bulk driven by a fluctuating electric field is investigated. In particular, by using a Monte Carlo approach, we study the influence of a random telegraph noise on the spin polarized transport. Our findings show the possibility to raise the spin relaxation length by increasing the amplitude of the external fluctuations. Moreover, we find that, crucially, depending on the value of the external field strength, the electron spin depolarization length versus the noise correlation time increases up to a plateau. (iii) Finally, the stabilization of quantum metastable states by dissipation is presented. Normally, quantum fluctuations enhance the escape from metastable states in the presence of dissipation. We show that dissipation can enhance the stability of a quantum metastable system, consisting of a particle moving in a strongly asymmetric double well potential, interacting with a thermal bath. We find that the escape time from the metastable region has a nonmonotonic behavior versus the systembath coupling and the temperature, producing a stabilizing effect.

Josephson junction ladders: Ground state and relaxation phenomena.

This paper considers a Josephson Junction array with the geometry of a ladder and anisotropy in the Josephson couplings. The ground state problem for the ladder corresponds to the one for the one-dimensional chiral XY model in a two-fold anisotropy field, which allows of a rigorous characterization of the ground state phase diagram and the relevant elementary excitations for the system. The app...

Exciton-induced lattice relaxation and the electronic and vibrational spectra of silicon clusters.

The geometrical structures and electronic and vibrational spectra of silicon clusters with 20, 60, and 70 atoms are investigated. Using a first-principles quantum-molecular-dynamics method we obtain the equilibrium structures, and study the effects of an exciton-induced lattice relaxation in these systems. The relaxation induced by the exciton may result in a strong distortion of metastable str...

Relaxation of the excess magnetization of random-field-induced metastable domains in Fe0.47Zn0.53F2.

The Faraday rotation of the excess magnetization in the field-cooled random-field Ising antiferromagnet FeO.47ZnO.S3F2 has been measured for fields 0 < H < 7 T applied along the easy axis at temperatures 5 K < T < 22 K, well below the H=O phase transition occurring at T= TN (=37 K). The relaxation of the excess magnetization, which is proportional to the Faraday rotation, does not follow the Na...

Emergence of Complex Spatio-Temporal Order in Nonlinear Field Theories

We investigate the emergence of time-dependent nonperturbative configurations during the evolution of nonlinear scalar field models with symmetric and asymmetric double-well potentials. Complex spatio-temporal behavior emerges as the system seeks to establish equipartition after a fast quench. We show that fast quenches may dramatically modify the decay rate of metastable states in first order ...
